Split testing is a way to bring the science back into marketing, and quite possibly the most accurate and effective way of doing online marketing research.

The technique of split testing combines two similar ads with subtle differences and puts them in competition with each other, factoring in which ad generates more impressions. The process continues for several split tests, until an ideal ad is discovered.

The test is done several times until the marketing company finds an ad that they feel is the perfect combination and a sure bet to increase sales.

Split testing is a major factor in what campaigns work and what campaigns do not. Rest assured the majority of online campaigns that succeed, ran an extensive split testing campaign beforehand.

Different products have different audiences, and what was successful to one may not be successful to another. Your product may have been a step-by-step guide to an online video game, and the product marketed by the expert was a relationship guide for Christian grandparents. These two topics are obviously completely different. Do you think they generate the same exact audience?

Split testing is one of the few research tools that an Internet marketer has at their disposal, so they use it quite readily.

In layman?s terms, split testing is basically taking two different ads with very minor differences and proving which one works more effectively. The minor differences can range from color or size text, to a certain phrase.

After the test is completed, the marketer will gauge which ad was more successful based on ad clicks. Reaching 40 or 50 clicks is a great indication of a successful ad. The marketer then takes the winning ad and pairs it up with another similar ad with another small change. This process continues several times.

Split testing is also used for newsletters, sales copy, and many other forms of writing that promote sales. A lot of marketers use software to help rotate their sales pages, and examine which technique works the most effectively.
